THE BEST LAUNDRY HACKS:
ECO-FRIENDLY LAUNDRY HACKS
1. Instead of using bleach, try lemon, peroxide, and vinegar
This is such a genius laundry hack. Not only is it better for the environment, but it will also be cheaper because you probably already have all of these things on hand! I am for sure trying this ASAP!
2. Avoid Ironing because it deteriorates clothing and shortens the life span of your clothing
Good thing I never iron anyways (and don't know how to either, lol) ?. This is for all my ironing addicts out there, you are deteriorating your clothes each time you iron them, so be careful! If I were to give you my honest opinion, I would take Downy Wrinkle Releaser any day over ironing!
3. Use vinegar to eliminate mildew scent instead of detergent with perfumes
Oftentimes when we use all of the fancy scented detergent, it is not eliminating the scent, instead, it's just masking it. Vinegar is an amazing natural way for you to truly clean your clothing and get rid of the gross scents.
4. Make your own laundry detergent to avoid chemicals going down your drain
Did you have any idea how many harmful chemicals were in laundry products? If you want to have a more eco-friendly laundry routine, you should definitely consider making your own laundry detergent. Most recipes combine borax, washing soda, baking soda, Castile soap, and essential oil.
For an in-depth recipe, here is a great eco-friendly resource.
5. Use dryer balls instead of dryer sheets to prevent waste and chemical exposure
Here's another thing I did not know about. Apparently, dryer sheets are filled with chemicals that are harmful to you and the environment. As an alternative, you can use dryer balls with essential oils on them. These dryer balls have rave reviews! If you don't care for the scent, you can also use new tennis balls.
EVERY-DAY LAUNDRY HACKS
6. Air dry clothes more often instead of using your dryer
As you are aware, the dryer uses a lot of energy. What you may not know is that the dryer also damages some of your clothing! If you have the time and space, I would highly recommend air drying your clothes.
It will save you money on your electric bill, and it will preserve the longevity of your clothing! If you are looking for a good way to air dry your clothes, a drying rack like this works amazing!
7. Use cold water to save energy and preserve clothing quality
While we're on the topic of saving energy and clothing longevity, let's talk about using cold water. Apparently, cold water is better for removing stains and preventing wrinkles and shrinkage. The crazy thing is, 75% to 90% of the energy your dryer uses goes to heating up the water. You could be saving a significant amount of energy just by using cold water!
8. Put a clean, dry towel in the dryer with your wet clothes to speed up the process
Okay, this is so smart! It totally makes sense if you think about it. By adding a dry towel to your load of wet clothes in the dryer, it will speed up the dry time by absorbing water!! I really need to try this sometime soon. If you're in a rush and need to speed up dry time, try this laundry hack!
9. Add baking soda into each wash to make your clothes even cleaner and boost your detergent
I don't know about you, but I have been doing this a ton lately, and the baking soda makes my clothes look and feel so much cleaner! You can buy a HUGE bag of baking soda from Costco for less than $5, and it can live in your laundry room! You've got to try this!
10. Use vinegar instead of fabric softener to make your clothes softer
I am actually shocked that I noticed such a big difference when I used vinegar in my laundry. I honestly thought it wouldn't make a big difference and make my clothes smell bad. But, it doesn't make your clothes smell at all and it gets rid of any really bad smells.
ORGANIZATIONAL LAUNDRY HACKS
11. Put all of your detergents and cleaning supplies in baskets to hide the ugly packaging
Something about walking into my laundry room and seeing a ton of bottles of cleaning and laundry supplies really gets on my nerves. I like things to look pleasing to the eye, and the easy solution to that is just to put all of your detergent bottles and laundry supplies in baskets on a shelf near your washing machine. This is more of an organization hack than an actual laundry hack, but being organized is so important!
12. Get a shelf to organize your cleaning supplies
I recently updated my laundry room, and the best thing I added was a shelf in the closet in my laundry room! With the help of some plastic bins and labels, my laundry room looks SO good, and yours can too! Check out my laundry room makeover here.
13. Put the laundry cleaning products in glass jars to see how much you have left & look prettier
This is really for aesthetic purposes (but those are important purposes too)!! When decorating my laundry room, I bought glass jars to store the scent unstoppable beads, and unfortunately, I dropped one of them and broke it everywhere. Sooo, I resorted to just using one of the jars for decorative purposes and filling it with clothespins. See what I used the jars for in my laundry room here.
14. Get laundry organizers to sort whites, darks, and delicates
It's so easy to just throw everything in a basket and worry about sorting when the time comes to put it all in the washer. If you want to make your future self very happy, but a laundry organizer that has multiple compartments, and separate your clothing by wash type as you take them off. This option from Amazon is perfect for organizing your dirty clothes before washing them.
15. Use a garment bag to wash your socks so they don't magically disappear
I literally always lose socks while doing laundry and I finally thought of a good solution! Get a lingerie bag or garment bag, and wash all of your socks in there. Unless they can magically unzip the zipper, they aren't going anywhere!
LAUNDRY MACHINE HACKS
16. Dry all of your clothes on a low heat setting to increase the longevity of your clothing
If you want your clothes to last for a while and be sustainable, you are going to want to always dry your clothes on low heat! Not only will it save a small amount of energy, but it will also prevent your clothes from getting damaged and keep them in new condition!
17. Clean your washing machine often
Did you know it's super important to clean your washing machine? There are washing machine cleaning pods you can purchase, but you can also DIY a cleaning solution. It is recommended to use baking soda, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide to scrub out the inside and all of the little crevices of the washer. Then, dump the solution in and do a hot wash cycle.
If you want a full analysis, check out this washing machine cleaning tutorial.
18. Take your lint trap out and wash it
Just like your washer, dryers can get dirty too! With dryers, any lint buildup could be potentially very dangerous. Take out your lint screen from time to time and give it a good scrub to get off every last bit of lint! This will not only protect you from starting an accidental fire, but it will make your dryer work more quickly and efficiently.
19. Broken machine? Use a salad spinner to wash individual items
Desperate times call for desperate measures. If your washing machine is broken and you need a smaller article of clothing washed ASAP, you can use a salad spinner filled with hot water and detergent to imitate the spin cycle of a washing machine. This is honestly so smart for when you are in a bind!
20. Throw your detergent lid in with the clothes to keep it clean!
I have done this so many times and it makes everything so much better! There is something so gross about a soapy detergent lid just sitting on the shelf and dripping soap onto the machines. If you want to clean the soapy lid, just throw it in with a load of laundry and it will come out crystal clean.

26. Tide To Go Stick
Having a tide to go stick will help you out in the long run! When you're out and about and spill coffee all over yourself, you can quickly spot treat it with a tide pen, and then worry about really washing it out later! That initial step of spot cleaning will make any stains that occur come up a lot easier.
27. Shout Color Catchers
Wow, these things are so cool! Throw this color catcher in with your load of laundry in the washer, and it will catch all of the colors that bleed out of clothing and could accidentally stain another article of clothing in the same load of laundry. Save your white clothes from turning pink or blue in the washer!
