This post gives you a step-by-step guide to the best living room deep clean for the freshest space.
Every spring and fall, I take time to deep clean each room in my house to make sure I’m feeling good and ready for the new season. You know I love to clean and organize, so this might be one of my favorite things I do in my house every year haha!
So today, I’m sharing my process with you for deep cleaning your living room, a space that just feels SO much better when it’s clean and fresh. No matter if you’re living room is always organized or if it’s super messy right now, get ready to tackle your living room with me!
Without further ado, here’s all the steps I do to make mine sparkle and feel inviting!
Step-By-Step Guide for a Total Living Room Deep Clean:
Step 1: Wash Blankets and Pillow Covers
First things first, I gather all the blankets and pillows in my living room to wash them. I remove the pillow covers from their cases and pile all the pillows in a different room of my house.
Make sure to check the care instructions on your blankets and covers so you don’t accidentally damage them!!
I wash them pretty normally except for using a special detergent for this step — my go-to is Bath & Body Works’ detergent, which leaves everything smelling amazinggg. I honestly didn’t know Bath & Body Works made detergent until recently, but now I’ll never wash my pillow cases and blankets with anything else!
Step 2: Clean the Couch
Now for the most important part of any living room — the couch! I love my couch but need to take such good care of it for it to last long. So I dedicate extra time to it in my living room deep clean.
Here’s my multi-step process for cleaning my couch:
- Vacuum: Start by vacuuming the couch, going up and down making fabric lines. And don’t forget the back cushions!
- Inside the Couch: Lift up the cushions and vacuum the inside! I bet tons of people never do this which is honestly pretty gross. This is where all the crumbs and debris loves to hide so it’s super important to clean this part of the couch.
- Flip the Cushions: Flipping the cushions over helps keep them looking fresh and new for longer. Just like a mattress! You’ll wear out your couch faster if you only ever sit on one side of the cushion, trust me.
- Green Machine: Next, I bring out my handy-dandy Green Machine! I love this thing so so much because it just cleans things so incredibly well. I use a special cleaning concoction in this to clean my couch which I shared with you below!
My Green Machine Magic Concoction:
- Tide Detergent in Refreshing Breeze
- Downy Fabric Softener in Lavender and Vanilla Bean
- Distilled Vinegar
- Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover
Also make sure to use a heavy hand for the detergent and fabric softener!
After making this, I vacuum over the sofa again using the Green Machine this time. This step creates those beautiful vacuum lines that just make my heart flutter! Plus, this concoction will leave your living room smelling fresh for about two weeks plus. I’m obsessed with it!
Step 3: Wipe Down Built-Ins and Shelves
If you have built-ins or shelves, remove every single item and wipe down the surfaces with a glass cleaner like Sprayway. I swear by this stuff.
Once the shelves are clean, put everything back where it was.
Step 4: Switch Laundry
At this point in the cleaning process, the blankets and pillow covers are ready to be switched over to the drier. Again, make sure to read the labels on your pillows to avoid any damage!
Step 5: Clean the Windows
I clean the windows inside and outside (mine open up pretty easily for me to do this) so they’re nice and shiny and can let in natural light easily. Open them up, clean the base of them, and give the outside a good scrub down too.
Step 6: Tackle the Ceilings and Corners
If your vacuum can do this, extend its hose to its longest setting and use it to reach the corners and edges of the ceiling. Take your time to make sure every nook and cranny is clean and every cobweb is taken care of.
Step 7: Put Everything Back and Enjoy!
Finally, once the blankets and pillow covers are dry, organize them back on the couch. Now, you can step back and enjoy the clean, cozy space you’ve just created!
Taking this time to deep clean your living room doesn’t just make it look better, it also makes it feel so much more comfortable to relax in. That’s why it’s one of my favorite things to do each year!
Whether you’re preparing for guests or just refreshing your space, following these steps will leave your living room looking and smelling absolutely amazing for weeks and weeks!
