Wondering how you're supposed to organize a small room with too much stuff? Or "how can I organize my bedroom without buying anything?"

If you’ve just moved into a new space or your current bedroom organization just isn’t doing it for you anymore, I’ve got the best bedroom organization ideas to elevate your room!

I think having a room that looks sophisticated and chic is just as important as having one that’s organized and tidy. With that being said, these are my favorite ways to organize your bedroom while making sure it looks cute and cozy.

This post is all about bedroom organization ideas.

BEDROOM ORGANIZATION IDEAS

1. Use shelves as decor and storage

I think that shelves are honestly such a cute way to zhuzh up a space! Plus they don’t have to be boring. You can use them to tidy up all your little items and style them so they look beautiful. I love using little baskets to hide items to look cuter and stacking little statement pieces on top of books to elevate the shelf.

2. Install hooks (hang scarves, bags, etc.)

Anything that has a tendency to pile up but could easily be hung needs a hook! Seriously, hooks really help keep the mess off the floor and everything way more organized (especially if you don’t feel like rehanging things on hangers all the time).

I have hooks in every closet in my house and especially in rooms where things tend to be tossed aside (*cough cough* the bedroom).

3. Use drawer dividers

When it comes to keeping your drawers tidy and from overflowing with crap, drawer dividers are the end all be all. They make it so easy to find whatever you’re looking for quickly and they’re so cheap! Such a simple solution to such an annoying problem 😉.

4. Rotate seasonal clothing

If you have enough closet space to keep all your clothes in, then that’s great! I love that for you. But if you’re like me, then you might need to rotate your clothes and store the out-of-season pieces somewhere else.

I think this is so helpful when it comes to saving space but also creating outfits more easily. Now you don't have to go through every piece of clothing you own in the morning to pick an outfit.

5. Utilize the space under the bed

We all have it! Might as well put it to work — that under the bed space is prized storage real estate. I love having roll out boxes and tubs for shoes, seasonal clothing, or anything you’re not using daily. Especially if you’re in a small bedroom or a bedroom without a closet, your under-the-bed space is your new bestie.

6. Implement a color-coded closet system

Trust me on this one - having a color-coded system like organizing your closet by color can make everything feel 10x more put together. You don’t have to buy anything or get rid of anything, you just need to reorganize everything by color… and it works wonders! Seriously, if you’re the type of person that likes instant gratification, then you need to try this.

7. Rearrange furniture to refresh the space

Make sure that your furniture is in the optimal layout for your size bedroom.

Honestly, sometimes I do this just for fun so I feel like I’m in a new room ha! But really, it’s worth trying out a couple of different arrangements to make sure you’re maximizing your bedroom. Find a friend and start hauling furniture around, you might just find that you weren’t letting your bedroom live up to its full potential!

8. Find cute storage boxes that can double as decor

If you know me then you know how much I love this! I use cute storage boxes all the time to hide my stuff and they really pull a room together. Plus there are so many cute styles to choose from, you can pick one that fits your exact bedroom aesthetic.

9. Maximize your vertical space

Tall ceilings? Sometimes they feel more like a curse than a blessing but they’re really essential when it comes to organization. If you can use shelves or bookcases to start storing your possessions upwards, that gives you more room on the ground. And don’t be intimidated if you feel something is too high or tucked away, I’m sure you have plenty of things that you don’t reach for every day (or every week or month even).

10. Hide bulkier items

Try stowing away the bulkier items so they're not in the way or taking up any unnecessary space! Nothing eats up a room like having your bulky items out and about.

11. Switch out hangers for space-saving velvet hangers

Okay so for one thing, velvet hangers just feel so much more luxurious than regular hangers. And two, they save space! Plus your clothes won’t fall off them so easily and end up on the floor. So they’re really saving closet space and floor space 😉

12. Move lighting to the floor to maximize space

If you’re low on table top spaces (like desks, dressers, and nightstands), then I recommend moving your lighting to the floor or the walls to save space. Kicking over a glass of water that was left on the floor because you don’t have room on your nightstand shouldn’t be a regular occurrence.

13. Organize cords in a cable box

Having cords everywhere is such clutter-core. Hiding your cords in boxes or with cord covers can make your room look less dorm and more adult bedroom, and it’s not that difficult either! I recommend using cable boxes around desks and nightstands, especially since that’s usually where you have the most cords.

14. Maximize space under your desk

The space under your desk is typically no man’s land but you can definitely change that. Maximize that space by adding drawers or a small organizational cabinet. You can tuck away little boxes or a garbage can or shoes… seriously, limitless option for that sneaky space.

15. Underbed storage

As I mentioned before, you need to use the space under your bed to its maximum potential! Some under the bed storage options I love are clear totes, shoe organizers, and smaller totes for bags and accessories (that you don’t use on the daily).

16. Nightstand organizers

Having a nightstand is such a game changer, not only for looking great and making your room feel more styled, but also for the amount of space to put things.

You can use them to hold your stuff, have an easily accessible lamp, use little trays to hold your smaller items like lip gloss… the list goes on and on!

But I will always recommend people to find a great set of nightstands for their room!

17. Use drawer dividers in nightstands

Drawer dividers aren’t just for your wardrobe, you can use these bad boys in your nightstand as well to organize books, personal items, and whatever else you keep in your nightstand! They can split one big drawer into three smaller sections. It will be way more organized and won’t get disorganized as often.

18. Repurpose utensil organizers for desk organization

Whoever said that those kitchen organizers had to just be for spoons and forks was wrong. They work so nicely for all your desk necessities like pens, sticky notes, scissors, staplers, chargers, etc. You can use the single organizers or the organizing trays, either will get the job done just right!

19. Label everything

This feels like it should be self explanatory, but seriously: label everything so everyone knows where items should be put away and where they can be found. I have labels on everything from my bedroom to my pantry to under the sink of my bathroom.

20. Use a clamp-on lamp to maximize space

If you’re trying to make those most of your desktop space, a clamp-on lamp can be so helpful. I like to place a shelf over my desk to hold and organize my desk related items and clipping a lamp to that shelf makes it easier to have proper lighting without sacrificing space.

21. Use peel-and-stick clips to organize cables

Cables are just the worst sometimes, and whether you’re using a cable cover or not, organizing them is key. Having a jumble of cables isn’t a good look and especially isn’t practical, which is why I recommend using peel-and-stick clips to keep those cables tidied up and not getting tangled.

22. Stick with a color palette

Colors are everything. Seriously, if you want a calm, relaxing oasis of a room then you’ll want to start by picking colors that make you feel organized and chill.

I always recommend sticking with neutral colors or slight pops of color here and there. Personally I don’t love having a room with so much going on color-wise. All up to your personal preference but trust me when I say that sticking to a color palette will make your space feel a whole lot more organized.

23. Hang closet organizers for little knick knacks

Don’t waste precious space and hangers with those little items that hang weird. That is why someone invented closet organizers and also why I love that person. Seriously, having a closet organizer is so helpful when it comes to maximizing your space. I swear by these for scarves, hats, belts, etc.

24. Buy multifunctional furniture pieces

I think multifunctional furniture is one of those slept on secrets. By having furniture that can double as something else, you’re not only saving space but you’re also optimizing your room’s potential. Especially with everyone being minimalists all of a sudden, having less that does more is so nice.

25. Use a filing cabinet under desk for more storage

Like I mentioned previously, you need to be using your under-the-desk space. And I love using a file cabinet under my desk for more storage. This could be for those random important documents that need to be somewhere you won’t lose them, or for makeup or art supplies or whatever your heart desires.

26. Organize the top of your dresser with a cute tray

Trays are so in right now, I love them and I love that they’re having their moment. I think having a cute little tray or dish to hold your jewelry, change, or hair accessories is a great way to tidy up your dresser and stay organized.

27. Hide printer to make your bedroom feel bigger

If your bedroom doubles as your home office, then finding a home for your printer can be burdensome. I always recommend hiding your printer somewhere you can still access it (like in a closet) but where it won’t take up a lot of unnecessary space.

So how do I keep my room tidy and organized? Honestly, I used most of these tips when I decorated our new bedroom and it has helped keep the room so organized and tidy. I have started to implement some of these tricks in other rooms of our house too!

I hope you’re able to use these ideas in your bedroom and design the most relaxing space for yourself. Having a bedroom to rest easy in is such a treat. 🙂
